ZYYX 3D Printer Unveils Patent-Pending Disruptive Metal 3D Printing Solution

The new metal 3D printing technology improves safety and reduces costs.

3D metal printing is still one of the driving forces in 3D printing in 2018.  ZYYX 3D Printer, the Swedish3D industrial printing company owned by Magicfirm Europe AB, has just unveiled a new metal 3D printing technology that concentrates on cutting costs.

The technology utilizes metal powder in a binder which significantly improves the safety of such procedures. Right now, the technique is still patent pending, but if it works, it could become a serious competition in the 3D metal printing market by bringing down costs to under €10,000 for the total system.

“We have been developing our metal 3d printing technology for some time and we are now ready to show an early stage proof of concept,” explained Mats Moosberg, CEO of Magicfirm Europe AB and creator of ZYYX 3D Printer. “We’re still fine-tuning the process and the objects we are showing now highlight the spectrum of materials and print volume. “

The company uses metal powder as the base material. However, due to it being kept in a binder, the material is safer to handle and can be dealt with without protective wear. The actual printing process is not too dissimilar to selective laser sintering and electron beam melting or filament-based metal 3D binding.

Here’s how ZYYX 3D Printer metal printing works

Firstly, the object to be printed is created as a “green body” using FDM-like techniques for higher resolution (around 50um). This also lets designers create complex shapes such as voids and lattices inside an object.

During the second step, the binder is removed to create the “brown object”. All of this is done without the need for toxic substances.

Lastly, the brown object is then sintered into a sturdy metal piece.

Models can be produced in a wide variety of materials including copper, bronze, brass, and steel.

Although the new technology is different compared to filament-based solutions, Magicfirm says that it will reach a similar resolution and mechanical properties. Sintering levels are currently at 98% with shrinkage of 21%.

The company hopes to develop the technique further to run an even more diverse range of materials through it.

Moosberg adds:
“We see a great opportunity to build upon our ZYYX pro 3D printer for engineering materials and give our customers access to another ZYYX tool for doing real prototyping and one-off production in metal – in a safe way regardless of facilities. We have also started talking to different parties for funding the continued development and commercialization of the product and to show real prints is a good way to get the word out there.”

The ZYYX pro printer is an industrial grade 3D printer specifically created for engineering materials. Manufacturing companies use it to more rapidly print functional prototypes, tools and other parts.
