The Prusa i3 MK3 is quite a printer. It’s claimed the title of “Best Printer” or the like in almost all of the major 3D printer shootouts. Makers from all over the world have used it to produce wonderful prints. What it offers is a well-balanced set of features, delivering top-notch results at a hobbyist’s price tag.
However, there’s nothing that can’t be improved. Case in point, Prusa Research and members of the 3D printing community have rolled out several upgrades for the MK3. Some improve the machine while others add functionality.
So, without further ado, let’s dive into the top 5 Prusa i3 MK3 upgrades.
This is a must-have upgrade for any Prusa i3 MK3 user. The MK3 is a joy to use, apart from one fiddly problem: The rubber feet keep falling out. It’s small, but it’s painful.
Thingiverse user Area51’s Feet Smart Lock design solves this problem with small, plastic inserts that hold the feet in place. It’s simple, it’s quick, and it works.
The official Prusa Multi-Material Upgrade 2.0 (MMU 2.0) is a bold step forward for anyone looking to up their 3D printing game. This upgrade kit comes with everything you need to transform the Prusa i3 MK3 into a five-material beast. That means that you can print with different colors, different materials, or both at the same time!
Assembly is required, and multi-material printing is not for the faint of heart. But if you’re up to it, the MMU 2.0 Prusa i3 MK3 upgrade will take your printer to a whole new level.
Josef Prusa himself has compared trying different nozzles to swapping out lenses for a camera. And because the Prusa i3 MK3 ships with an authentic E3D V6 hot end, there’s a whole ecosystem of parts available to swap in and out.
In particular, you can try smaller nozzles for highly detailed miniatures, or larger nozzles for quick, large prints. If you’re feeling ambitious, a hardened nozzle will let you print with abrasives, and a Volcano upgrade will enable you to print even faster.
Trying new nozzles is a great way to get more flexibility and functionality out of your Prusa i3 MK3.
The R2 Printed Parts upgrade is an official printer update directly from Prusa Research. It includes a number of improvements for the Prusa i3 MK3’s printed parts, such as the built-in belt tensioner in the new X motor mount.
If you have an MK3 from before these updates were added (February 2018), we recommend printing and swapping them in for increased reliability. Get the files here.
Note: These files have been replaced by the R3 upgrades (below) because most printers already ship with the R2 upgrades.
The R3 Printed Parts upgrade is the newest printer update from Prusa Research. This time, the parts targeted were in the extruder assembly, specifically tackling cooling and optimizing the filament path.
In particular, users have reported improved heatsink cooling, which will help reduce the chances of filament jams while printing. This will maximize the reliability of your machine and make it more enjoyable to use.

Hopefully, these 5 Prusa i3 MK3 upgrades will help you get the most out of the already amazing Prusa i3 MK3. Continue exploring new ways to be creative, whether with your own upgrades or with new filaments.
Happy printing, and stay inspired!
