When the Dutch 3D printing manufacturer Ultimaker released the Ultimaker S5 3D printer back in May 2018, it marked a clear declaration that the company was expanding its focus beyond the maker community to encompass the professional 3D printing market as well.

Marketed as a highly capable, reliable, and intuitive FDM 3D printer, the Ultimaker S5 is a desktop-sized dual-extrusion system that offers a large build volume, exceptional print quality, and is also compatible with an abundance of engineering-grade materials – making it ideal for professional users.

But for designers, engineers, and small businesses looking to integrate 3D printing into their workflow, they need to consider much more than just the 3D printer. The storage of the filament, the ability to automate production, the safety of the surrounding environment, these are all factors that need to be broached before the many benefits of additive manufacturing can be maximized.

In an effort to satisfy the challenges and fickle nature of prototyping and production, Ultimaker recently decided to improve the performance of its Ultimaker S5 by integrating additional hardware enhancements both above and below the 3D printer. This resulted in the release of the Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle: a package deal that combines the Ultimaker S5 with a brand new Material Station and Air Manager.

Put simply, these add-ons provide the Ultimaker S5 3D printer with a more comprehensive production ecosystem. It makes the overall 3D printing process much more efficient by automating material delivery, while also creating a safer, more user-friendly environment. How so? Let’s review the specs to find out.

Priced at $9,100, the Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle is much more expensive than the Ultimaker S5 printer itself, which costs $5,995. Designed to further optimize 3D printing in the professional environment, this package deal intends to bolster the already adept production capabilities of the Ultimaker S5 3D printer.

Leveraging the modular design of this professional-grade FDM 3D printer, the Bundle includes two additional components that seamlessly attach to the S5. To properly convey what the Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle has to offer, we’ll have to break down the features into three primary components: the Ultimaker S5 3D printer, Ultimaker S5 Material Station, and Ultimaker S5 Air Manager.

Here’s a quick breakdown of what comes with the Ultimaker S5 Pro Bundle.

Ultimaker S5 3D Printer

The Ultimaker S5's top end dual extrusion.

Shifting focus from the maker community to professionals, designers, and small businesses, the Ultimaker S5 prides itself on being reliable, intuitive, and capable of producing high-quality parts. This professional-grade desktop machine boasts a 330 x 240 x 300 mm build volume, dual extrusion capabilities, as well as an improved feeder system with a filament flow sensor, which automatically stops printing jobs when the filament is about to run out.

With swappable print cores, users can easily change out nozzle sizes to satisfy their printing needs, whether that be high-speed printing or producing 3D models with intricate details. Another performance-focused feature of the Ultimaker S5 is the two interchangeable build plates. The glass print bed is used for general use materials, while the ultra-flat anodized aluminum bed is designed to handle advanced engineering materials, such as ABS and PC.

The manufacturer was able to increase the speed of the printing process by implementing a Bowden extrusion system and ultra-light print head. Designed with a tighter filament path, this extruder is highly compatible with flexible materials, such as TPU. Covering the print head and nozzle is a silicone cover that promotes more consistent airflow and efficient material throughput.

With a crisp white frame color and dual doors situated on the front of the machine, the Ultimaker S5 pulls from Ultimaker’s iconic aesthetic. At the same time, there’s a more intuitive nature to this machine, including the full-color touchscreen display that is stocked with user-adjustable settings.

Released back in May 2018, the Ultimaker S5 has been on the professional 3D printing market for over a year now. But the addition of the Material Station and Air Manager brings this popular FDM machine to the next level of professionalism, making the printing experience more convenient and environmentally-friendly.

Ultimaker S5 Material Station

Positioned underneath the Ultimaker S5 3D printer, the Material Station acts as an automated material delivery system and storage unit. It includes six NFC-enabled spool bays that are equipped with hassle-free pre-feeders. With this mechanism, spools are automatically swapped out without causing any friction or filament tangling.

Not only does the Material Station make the overall production process more efficient, but it also eliminates manual operations and time-consuming lulls that come during the filament reload process. By eliminating the manual labor of swapping out spools, untangling filament, or simply trying to gauge whether you have enough material to finish a print, the Ultimaker S5 Bundle intends to give makers the freedom to turn their attention to more creative or meaningful tasks.

One benefit of the Ultimaker S5 Material Station’s loading system is that spools can be fully used and quickly changed in the middle of a print without causing concern about whether the job will finish before the filament runs out. Moreover, filament spools can be quickly switched either before, after, or even in the midst of a print.

While the Ultimaker S5 Material Station is optimized for use with NFC-equipped Ultimaker filaments, the bays are also compatible with third-party materials from other leading brands, including glass and carbon-fiber-reinforced filaments, so long as the dimensions of the spool fit into the station.

Using Ultimaker Connect printer management software, material configurations can be pre-loaded, allowing users to assign certain filaments for upcoming print jobs while the S5 maximizes uptime by prefeeding the selected material before the next job even starts.

Aside from functioning as an automatic feeding system, the Ultimaker S5 Material Station also provides protection from humidity or dust, both of which can be detrimental to filament quality. The fully enclosed chamber contains silica gel to extract moisture and prevent the polymer from degrading. It also manages to keep internal humidity below 40%, even in situations where the external environment contains up to 70% humidity.

Ultimaker S5 Air Manager

Finally, there’s the Ultimaker S5 Air Manager, mounted atop of 3D printer to fully contain the printing process and create a safer overall work environment. Not only does the Air Manager fully enclose the Ultimaker S5’s open-ended top, but it also includes an intelligent fan and air filtration system.

The built-in EPA filter removes up to 95% of UFP emissions, ensuring that potentially harmful particles or odors don’t leak out while printing with engineering-grade materials. Without having to worry about the air quality surrounding the print environment, users will be able to go about their day while letting the Ultimaker S5 extrude away.
