The Anycubic Kossel Linear Plus is Chinese 3D printer manufacturer Anycubic’s supersized and upgraded version of its popular Kossel delta printer.
Building upon the Anycubic Kossel, the Anycuboc Kossel Linear Plus is different for two main things: it ditches the pulleys for its locomotion system for linear rails with guides, and packs a larger print bed.
As the name suggests, it is based on the Kossel RepRap variant, meaning that as 3D printers go, it is relatively open. the Linear Plus runs the open source Marlin firmware, and as such Anycubic has made their fork of it for the Linear Plus available for download on the company’s website.
As we mentioned above, the Anycubic Kossel Linear Plus is pretty distinctive at its price point (approx. $200 – $300) for two main reasons.
Firstly, in a move that should bring marginally greater stability, accuracy and repeatability, the Anycubic Kossel Linear Plus features linear guides in place of pulleys (as found on its smaller sibling, the Anycubic Kossel).
Often used for their low-friction and superior response to repeated fast movements, these linear guides are the reason the Anycubic Kossel Linear Plus is pitched as being the machine for those in need of high precision and “durable performance”.
Whether there’s a noticeably difference in print quality between the two, we couldn’t say without going hands on. It’s a safe bet however that the linear guides will require less maintenance in the long term and are less likely to loosen and degrade over time, meaning less maintenance than you may be used to with pulleys.
However, some note that linear guides can be noisier than pulleys, so there are some small drawbacks for that extra precision.
Secondly, we have the large print bed. Upgrading on the plain Anycubic Kossel’s Φ180 x 300mm print volume, the Anycubic Kossel Linear Plus boasts a Φ230 x 300mm print area. This puts it roughly in the same league as the Prusa i3 Mk3 for print area, though of course the print volume on a delta 3D printer tapers on account of the reach of the arms as they rise up their respective rails.
It’s worth noting this print bed is heated, comes with a BuildTak-like sticker, and is capable of reaching 100 degrees Celsius. Pretty standard.
Automatic bed leveling comes as part of the package, with the print head descending to the bed and making contact with the bed across a matrix of points. For such an inexpensive printer this is a great feature to have, but discussion around the printer indicates this as being one of the Anycubic Kossel Linear Plus’ weaker points, mostly down to poor hardware and buggy firmware.
As is often the case with cheap 3D printer kits, the quality can vary, so it could be a case of a vocal few pointing out the inferior kits where a silent majority seem perfectly happy with what they get from the printer. The overall consensus seems to be positive though, with the Anycubic Kossel Linear Plus garnering average to positive user reviews across the board.
Coming as a flat-packed kit, some assembly is required. Anycubic notes that some 80% of the build work for the Anycubic Kossel Linear Plus is already complete, with the heated bed, electronics, rails and print head with effector pre-assembled.
